Matcha is one of the most nutritionally dense drinks available. Not in the way that wellness marketing tends to frame it, but in a measurable, compound-specific way that is well supported by peer-reviewed research. L-theanine, EGCG, chlorophyll. These are not marketing terms. They are specific, studied compounds with documented effects, and matcha delivers them in higher concentrations than almost any other dietary source. The one qualification that most benefit articles leave out is this: those concentrations are directly tied to the grade of what you are drinking. Here is what the evidence actually shows, and why quality is the missing piece in almost every answer to this question.
L-theanine and sustained focus
L-theanine is the amino acid most associated with what makes matcha feel different to coffee. It is found almost exclusively in tea plants and reaches its highest concentration in first flush shade-grown leaves. It crosses the blood-brain barrier and increases alpha brain wave activity, the state associated with calm, alert focus rather than the spike and crash that comes from caffeine alone.
When L-theanine and caffeine are present together, as they are in matcha, the two compounds work in combination. L-theanine moderates the rate at which caffeine enters the bloodstream, extending the duration of focus without the drop. Research published in Nutritional Neuroscience found that the combination significantly improved speed and accuracy on cognitive tasks compared to either compound alone.
The L-theanine concentration in matcha is significantly higher than in steeped green tea because you consume the entire ground leaf. And within matcha, first flush shade-grown leaf delivers more L-theanine per gram than any later harvest.
EGCG and antioxidant activity
EGCG, epigallocatechin gallate, is the most abundant and most studied catechin in matcha. It is a plant-based polyphenol antioxidant with well-documented anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties. Research consistently shows that EGCG inhibits the production of inflammatory cytokines and reduces markers of systemic inflammation. It crosses the blood-brain barrier and has been studied for its potential to protect neurons from oxidative stress.
The research on EGCG and cancer is substantial but warrants careful framing. Laboratory and animal studies have shown that EGCG can inhibit the growth of certain cancer cell lines. Human population studies show associations between green tea consumption and reduced risk of certain cancers. Causation has not been established and the research is ongoing. The honest position is that the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties are well supported, while direct cancer benefit claims go beyond what the current evidence firmly establishes.
EGCG concentration, like L-theanine, peaks at first flush and declines with each subsequent harvest. Shade-growing drives higher catechin accumulation. Organic cultivation, which produces slower growth without synthetic inputs, results in a leaf with higher compound concentrations than conventionally grown matcha from the same harvest period.
Chlorophyll
Chlorophyll is the compound behind the vivid green colour of high-quality ceremonial grade matcha, and it is biologically active beyond aesthetics. It has been studied for antioxidant properties and its role in supporting detoxification pathways. Chlorophyll concentration is highest in first flush shade-grown leaves and is one of the most reliable visual quality indicators available. A dull, olive-toned matcha has lower chlorophyll concentration. The colour tells you what is in the tin before you open it.
Because matcha is consumed as whole ground leaf rather than brewed and discarded, the full chlorophyll content of the leaf goes directly into your body with every bowl.

Metabolic effects
EGCG has been studied in the context of fat oxidation, insulin sensitivity and blood glucose regulation. The evidence is consistent across multiple studies but the effect sizes are modest, and most research uses concentrated EGCG extracts rather than whole matcha. Real-world dietary matcha consumption may produce different results to clinical extract doses. The metabolic benefits are real but should be understood as meaningful rather than dramatic.
Why the grade behind the benefit matters
This is the part most benefit articles leave out.
The research on matcha's health properties was conducted on high-quality, properly sourced green tea and matcha. The compounds that produce those benefits, L-theanine, EGCG, chlorophyll, accumulate during slow, careful cultivation under specific conditions. First flush. Shade-grown. Single cultivar. JAS certified organic.
A later-harvest, non-organic, blended matcha labelled ceremonial grade will have meaningfully lower concentrations of all of these compounds. The benefits do not disappear entirely, but they are diminished in direct proportion to the quality of the leaf. Drinking matcha for its health properties and sourcing a lower-grade product is not the same as drinking matcha for its health properties and sourcing a genuine first flush ceremonial grade from a certified organic producer.
The froth, the colour, the flavour, the preparation method. All of these matter for the same reason. A drink prepared correctly from a quality source delivers the full compound profile the plant is capable of producing. A pre-batched matcha from a lower-grade source does not.
